A NIGHT IN COLOGNE

THE JAMESON DISTILLERY - April 22, 1998
Well the Mac is in Cologne promoting The Crock of Gold - 'You can show up if you want...'
That's what a friend told me. '...if I want?!?!' It was obvious that I would grab my mic and tape recorder and take the dual carriageway to the
beautiful city on the River Rhine. We entered the beautiful pub and started drinking, eating and watching football on tv. Some 200 minutes after
he was due, Shane appeared, waving his way through the crowd with martini bottle in hand. He found a table and sat there nearly lifeless. I asked the
PR woman when the interview would start and she replied with a suffering look 'Mr. MacGowan wants to drink himself fit.'
When the moment came, I sat next to him and began to ask some questions. He answered (and moved) very slowly - to light a cigarette and drink
from his pint would take an eternity... Soon we were joined by Paul McGuinness and Tom McManamon of the Popes, also a bit loaded, but faster in their ways.
Eventually they took the stage and did a few acoustic numbers. Shane stayed at his table and didn't stand to sing, or do much else for that matter.
We were disappointed by that but perhaps his disdain for promotion is one of the reasons record companies are reluctant to sign him. Anyway, I'm glad I met
him and proud of the photos and interview from that evening in Cologne!!
The Interview
ROBIN:Do you like The Crock of Gold?
SHANE MacGOWAN:I like it a lot...yeah.
Do you like it better than the last one[The Snake]?
Uh...yeah.
What does singing mean to you?
Singing..aah...what does sticking a microphone in somebody's face mean to you?
When was the last time you were in Packaun? Do you go there often?
Yeah, I try to...yeah.
Is it home to you?
No. I'm from -???- which is near Broad Packaun.
Do you still love Ireland?
What? Yeah.
You won the prize some time ago. What does that mean to you?
I was very flattered, you know. I was very flattered-overjoyed.
When will we see you in Germany? Will you come?
(to Joey Cashman)When will we be in Germany?
JOEY CASHMAN:We hope to be in Germany.. in July-August period. We're talking about the possibility of
Guinness being involved, it depends. And it depends on other dates as well because we're going to be in
America for all of June and we can't just finish one tour and go immedialely into another one. We have to have a break.
We're in Bramman
on July 17th anyway so perhaps we'll put dates around that.
How do you like Germany?
I like Germany a lot.
Because of Ingrid or because Germany is beautiful?
No, 'cause I like Germany...good country, you know...
What feelings do you have when you go on stage and all the people go mad and love you and adore you?
Elation, obviously, you know.
Great Power from the audience, right?
Yeah. It's the audience that it's all about.
Will you play tonight?
Tonight? I don't know. Nobody seems that interested. We'll see what happens.
Ok! Thank you very much.
Alright.
