The Pogues

Hammersmith Clarendon ~
London, March 17, '85

Saint Paddy's Day, '85 and The Pogues were in top form. The band is brilliant but the sound is mediocre audience, typical of the day.

Bull & Gate ~
London, March 30, '85

This seems to be a good audience recording of a crazy show. The band is rockin' and the audience sings along enthusiastically. That might bother me a bit in different situations, but here it seems to lend itself to the party atmosphere that night.

Greenland Whale Fisheries ~
Tracks 1-13:Sweden, May '85
Tracks 14-26:England, Nov '84

These two shows sound ok, but the quality of the performance more than makes up for the audio deficiencies. Shane's in great form, but the vocals tend to drown out the instruments a bit here & there. For the time period, however, it's very cool.

McGonagles ~
Dublin '85

Great show, really decent sound. There are some bad edits, especially right at the beginning and at the beginning of Waxie's Dargle, but I'd rather have bad edits than an incomplete show! This was one of my first Pogues boots and has remained one of my favorites. Spder needed some practice on ...Brown Eyes (in it's early stages).

This is an audience recording that sounds pretty good but not great. The set seems pretty lively with the band partying it up quite a bit. There is a second disc that has a few minutes of Spider just jamming on the whistle to a few different Pogues and traditional songs.

Glastonbury Festival ~
England June 18, '86

I found this to have really good audience sound of a really good performance. Lots of great tunes from Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, with a desperate plea from Cait asking the audience to take "one step back" before a great version of A Man You Don't Meet Everyday. I'd like to hear some more shows from this era.

This is a pretty standard low quality audience recording. Lots of great tunes, as always, but not the type of thing I put on often. Sounds like a tape recorder at the back of the bar with a lot of crowd noise. Performance wise, it's an energetic set. I would say, however, that this is for completists only.

Syph Down in Cologne ~
Cologne, Germany November, '86

No one can pinpoint the actual date of this show. They were in Germany in November of 1986, but the set list doesn't make sense. Take a look at the Munich show above - they played many songs from If I Should Fall From Grace With God at that show but not a one here. I find it hard to believe (but not impossible) that this show was from November. More than likely it was the Spring or early Summer. Regardless, it's a really rockin set with standard audience sound from the day - tolerable if you're used to it but hissy and annoying if you aren't.

Hammersmith Palais ~

This might be the one of the best shows I have. THe sound is good audience, not great, but the show is as good as it gets. An early show with Terry Woods and lots of great tunes like Rake at The Gates of Hell and The Parting Glass make this an excellent addition to my collection. Boots like this help me appreciate audience recordings.

Barrowlands Balroom ~
Glascow December 13, '86

Almost an identical set to the Hammersmith show 3 days earler. This is a good show but the sound falls short being truly enjoyable. Every show I've heard from the Barrowlands is incredible and those who saw them there shoud feel fortunate. We're lucky we have the Town & Country video. This CD is not Disc At Once, which means there are annoying 2 second gaps between songs.

Overall a cool collection of rare stuff. pretty decent quality for the most part. As a bonus, London Calling & I Fought The Law with Joe Strummer are thrown it at the end. I think they're the same as the B sides from Tuesday Morning (maybe?).

Nyon Festival ~
Switzerland July 24, 87

This is a pretty good show but the sound is a bit flat. It seems very likely that this was coverted from a slightly worn, possibly heat damaged soundboard tape to a CD, resulting in a general lack of high end and some tonal fluctuation. At times, however, it clears up for a few moments of great listening. It is very listenable to those who are not incrdibly picky. Once your ears adjust to the sound, the show really packs a lot of energy into some great versions of these tunes. More of the default "Paddybilly" Art and a color piece I recently found somewhere.

NYC MSG ~
Madison Square Garden, New York City November 29, '87

As support for U2 The Pogues play the premiere arena in the states. Sound is audience in a half full arena. It is very heavy on the echo as a result. Shane's voice and the snare are prevelant with an occasional mandolin or whistle breaking through, but it does improve a bit as the set goes on. A rocking set for the opening band but short, and a bit of a tough listen.

This is audience recorded. It is more listenable than Munich & Toronto, but you can still hear that annoying bastard howling like a drunken banshee that seems to follow you around to every concert you ever attend. Dont get me wrong, I love a rowdy concert, but when all I can hear is some moron hollering out of key and clapping his hands out of time, it tends to detract from the music. The show is fantastic, however. Shane sounds great on Kitty, and the band is right on.

Landgraaf, Holland, May 23, '88

The sound of this cd is decent audience but overall it is somewhat disappointing. They open with Battle March Medley which is almost unlistenable due to feedback. Then midway through the song the bass guitar kicks in and eventually the feedback subsides. The set is not up to par with the other shows I've heard and seen from '88 and Shane is not sounding as good as he does in the Japan video or the Town & County video, both from the same year.

Welcome to the Opera ~
Boston, Ma. '88 & '89

This is a 2 cd set with all of disc one and 1-5 on disc two recorded on September 30, 1989 at The Opera House in Boston, disc two tracks 6-13 were recorded on December 1, 1988 at The Metro in Boston, and 14 & 15 were from their 1989 St Patrick's Day appearance on Saturday Night Live. Both Boston shows are audience recorded, but very good sound, considering. I found the shows to be energetic, lively and tight. Strummer sings his 2 tunes from the 88 show and they are probably the best versions I have heard besides the Town & Country video (which only included London Calling). The SNL tracks were probably taken straight from video and sound excellent. A worthwhile aquisition!

The same show as Sink That Bottle below, but with Broad Majestic Shannon and without the last 5 tunes. I think the show is great but the sound on this sucks compared with Sink. This show has fantastic sound and it's a good show for that tour. Not nearly as raw as Hamburg & Dublin, but an overall great sounding, well performed show on all counts. The art is incorrectly labeled Europe 1990. Notice that it is the same show as Streams Of Whiskey above, but that CD has The Broad Majestic Shannon and is missing the last few songs this one has.

This 2 CD set is in front of a huge crowd and the sound suffers a bit as a result. Spider seems like he's had a few and Shane's a bit in the bag as well. As a result the band is noticibly sloppier than usual. It's mostly listenable with occassional feedback problems and various instruments coming in and out of the mix at various times. Not the kind of thing I play alot, but not awful by any means.

This is a fine sounding audience recording of a great show. A bit tinny and distorted at times but overall a decent bootleg. Shane is in that "drunk enough to be great-but not too drunk to suck" mode and the band seems exceptionally inspired. To bad three songs are missing. There are also little 1/2 second gaps between tracks that bug the hell out of me.

The Falconer Demos ~
Pre-Hell's Ditch demos

Are these the elusive Hell's Ditch demos I've read about? Why are they called The Falconer Demos ? They are definately pretty rare and also very cool! A bit hissy and lo-fi, but definately listenable. Every track warrants a description here... Murder Ska is an upbeat ska tune that Spider sings. Horns and everything here!. Ghost, Wake, Siam, & Queens are all early demos of songs that would end up on Hell's Ditch. They sound raw and unpolished, but that is exciting when you're used to the album versions!. Different intros and some different drum parts too. Bastard Landlord is very similar to the version from the Summer In Siam 12" but I think its a different vocal track and lacks one of the background instruments. NW3 is an early version of Mother Mo Chroi which is not officially released until Shane's The Crock Of Gold CD several years later. It's faster and has different lyrics. Victoria is another song that won't be released until Shane leaves the Pogues and re-records it for The Snake. Just a bass drum keeping time, A guitar strumming rhythm, and a saxaphone doing the melody. There is also a bass and possibly a mandolin, but no vocals. Redemption Song has Spider singing. Just a guitar, bass drum and snare here. Sounds like it has potential to be cool! Lust For Vomit is a very early version of A Mexican Funeral In Paris, which is also found later on The Snake. It's instrumental with lots of sax and a cool organ part. I would like to know more about these tracks. If you can help me out, please EMAIL me!

I'm sorry to say that this is NOT available for trades at this time.

Although the sound isn't perfect, it is really good soundboard of a really good show. The Chieftains come in somewhere around Streams of Whiskey and stay 'till the end. Lots of energy, tons of cool songs, and a pretty good effort by Shane for '91. 2 CDs.

Superb sound & great performances, although Shane messes up a couple times. Like many shows from this tour, he has some trouble keeping up with the band. This show seems better than most. The energy of the band is amazing, and again, the quality of the sound is among the best of any Pogues boot I've heard.

Shane is in rehab and Joe Strummer has taken over vocal duties. Being a huge Clash and Strummer fan, I finally got around to checking out one of these shows. Joe pulls it off just fine, although Shane is irreplaceable. He knows the songs and is competent and capable of making them work. Supposedly, this is about the best quality available of any of the shows with Strummer on vocals. It's a transfer from a cassette and the high end fluctuates and weaves in and out, but some of that may be the result of the guy with the recorder dancing about or something. Overall a cool novelty to have if you're a Strummer fan, but not a must have when compared to other titles from this time period.

The first of the reunion shows from the brief tour in December, 2001. Sound is quiet and somewhat muffled and the band seems a bit out of practice, but hey, at lease someone recorded it! Sounds like there was a good mix at the venue but the recorder might have been too far back to get a really good representation of the show. I was happy to see Tuesday Morning was included and The Parting Glass is a song rarely heard live.

This sounds a bit better than the mancester show and they add Old Main Drag to the set, which is cool to hear. Still not the best audience record you'll hear, but not unlistenable to a die hard fan. Since these shows were at the tail end of the mini tour, the band is much tighter and it it is a better show.

The Grand ~
Clapham, London, March 17, '94

One of Shane & the Popes earliest shows here. 4 of the last 5 tunes are also included on the Gin Lane, Beer Street boot. The sound here is pretty poor audience - lots of hiss and overall pretty lo-fi. I do like the show, however. The contraversial Boys of Kilmichael is included, which is cool. That tune, I've heard, deals with some IRA issues and due to the potential controversy was left off The Snake. Too bad because it's a great tune!

A pretty bad audience recording of a pretty good show. There are a few rarities early in the set but the thing I like about this one is Whiskey in the Jar. They pull out a version more similar to the Thin Lizzy take rather than the traditional one that appeared on the Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! ep.

Great live show from the early days of Shanes post-Pogues career. The 95 stuff sounds much better than the 94 stuff, but it's overall a great cd. The sound from 95 is a great feed from the board. It's a bit high-end heavy at first, but it eiter gets better or you get used to it quickly. Fantastic performance, too. The Saint Patrick's Day 1999 songs don't sound nearly as good as the rest of the show and are also found on THE GRAND show listed above.

Ok audience sound, but it seems like it was a special show with Terry Woods in attendance and appearing on a few songs and Siobhan singing Fairytale with Shane. Shane sounds ok for that year but the band is a bit sloppier than usual. Overall not bad but not the kind of thing I'll go back to often. Another surprisingly good example of an audience recording. The levels are good and there's not too much background noise, except the usual drunken sing along choruses. Shane seems like he's in a great mood on this night, cracking jokes about football and bantering with the audience a bit more than usual.

Although not as good as the Minneapolis or Glasgow shows, this CD is a very listenable souvenier from the 99 tour. Shane manages to hold it together somewhat, but he's obviously not quite as alert as he used to be. His voice is strong and a little tweak of the high end goes a long way with this one.

Tracks 1-4 are acoustic versions played on a BBC radio show in December of 95(?). They are very cool, especially South Australia, even though Shane's voice isn't at it's best. He dedicates it to Terry Woods. There is a good part of the interview too which is funny. Tacks 6-9 are rehearsals and sound very good. Live in the studio. Tracks 10-12 are outtakes. I'm not sure if Mama Lou is the same as the version from the Crock Of Gold demos. In fact, on the 2 cd version of Golden Sessions, the first disc is all alternative mixes from ...Crock. So basically, this is disc 2. Disc one is available as part of the 7 CD set of the complete rarities, available if you look hard enough.

This is an audience recording and the sound is ok but not great and the show is the same - ok but not great. He brings out a new tune - the tradiditional Granuaile, which is pretty neat. Unfortunately, the CD cuts off in the middle of Streams of Whishey, and the last two songs of the night, Bottle of Smoke and Hank Williams' Angel of Death are lost. If anyone has the full show, please contact me!

Great audience sound make this show an exptional find. The band is loose and a bit sloppy compared to most nights and Shane has some trouble keeping up in a couple spots, but it's not a terrible performance at all. Some inflamitory remarks at the beginning are an attempt to get the audience riled up, but it doesn't really seem neccessary as the energy level of the crowd seems really high. After Lupos, this is my favorite MacGowan show from this time frame.

This is an audience recording that sounds pretty crappy. Spider Stacy's band at the time opened and their set is included here which is a bonus (tracks 1-9), but the sound of the CD is bad for them too! Possibly one of the best bootlegs I've heard from Shane. The instruments sound like they are recorded from the soundboard but the vocals sound like they were recorded from an audience tape. It was probably just a really good clean audience recording and the PA at this place sounded great! Rockin show, Shane talking shite all night and the band sounding great. This and Gin Lane, Beer Street are highly recommended.

Another audience recording from the Spring 2001 tour. Same exact set. Pretty close in quality to the Detroit show but probably just a hair better sound. Sounds like the PA was not working that great because there are a couple dropouts and some feedback.

A Majestic Affair ~
Detroit, Mi., March 29, 2001

This is an audience recording from Shane's recent tour. The sound varies from hissy and flat to bright and clear. A bit too much talking within close proximity of the mic as well. But, overall, it's an easy listen after the fist two songs. The setlist is basically the same for the whole tour and Shane was sounding better than he has in years.

Vic Theatre ~
Chicago, March 31, '01

Good audience recording of a typical show fom 2001. Shane is a bit more talkative than usual, but not much. The acoustics at The Vic aren't the greatest, but this turned out ok. Sounds like it was probably from DAT. Better than Detroit and Montreal but not as good as Lupos. The thing that sucks about this is that all space between songs is missing. I don't understand why since the disc comes in at under 72 minutes and there would be plenty of room. Instead the songs fade in and out, and in a couple of instances they are even clipped. This totally ruins the flow of the show and I would be interested to know why whoever ediited to CD did this. Oddly enough, the crowd's reaction to Shane barfing on the stage after Sally Maclenanne is included.

This is the most recent Shane show I have. The sound is poor audience - very quiet and hissy. The show seems pretty good though, with the bass player wasted and spewing unintelligable banter into the microphone. They play Back in the County Hell here which hadn't been heard live before, and The Auld Triangle is a surprising addition too. It might be the only time I've ever seen a set that didn't include Sally Maclenanne. Ot
